Vaginal Atrophy

Vaginal atrophy can occur when the female body loses estrogen, resulting in inflammation, drying, and a thinning of the vaginal walls.

What is vaginal atrophy?

Vaginal atrophy can occur when the female body loses estrogen, resulting in inflammation, drying, and a thinning of the vaginal walls. Since a loss in estrogen is closely associated with this form of atrophy, most women experience symptoms after menopause. Due to the interconnectedness of the vaginal and urinary symptoms, vaginal atrophy is also commonly referred to as genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM).

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms of vaginal atrophy/GSM may include:

  • Vaginal discharge
  • Vaginal burning
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Itchiness of the genital area
  • Urinary incontinence and urgency with urination
  • Burning during urination
  • More frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Painful intercourse
  • Slight bleeding after intercourse
  • A tightening or shortening of the vaginal canal
  • Decreased vaginal lubrication during sex

These symptoms can range in severity levels. If you are experiencing any of these issues, Dr. Taaly Silberstein can help. With the proper diagnosis, a treatment plan can be implemented. Other risk factors include: cigarettes (which affect your blood circulation, reducing oxygen and estrogen levels), a lack of sexual activity and no vaginal births.

How does Dr. Silberstein diagnose vaginal atrophy?

Pelvic examinations can be schedule to diagnose those condition. During a pelvic exam, Dr. Silberstein will check the pelvic organs, external genitalia, vagina and cervix. She can also check for signs of pelvic organ prolapse (POP), which occurs when one of your pelvic organs falls out of place and into the vaginal wall. Urine tests and an acid balance test can also help provide a diagnosis.
